A two piece paddle...very curly koa shaft and monkey pod blade, carved and painted. Mortise and tenon joint with glue and natural fiber hand braided rope soaked in linseed oil and Danish oil. The design celebrates the Trobriand islands of Papua New Guinea.

To stumble across a beautiful piece of mango like this does not happen very often!
The design represents a man and his spirit...in this instance taking the form of a bird. (His mana...his strength.) The shape of the blade is taken from old Hawaiian war paddle design while the design inside is inspired from Sepik River (Papua New Guinea) carvings.

The beauty of the quilted maple speaks for itself. (A rare cut of wood) The flat side of the paddle is carved with a dragon like image inspired from the island of Umboi, Papua New Guinea. This is a two piece paddle with the shaft (curly maple) attached to the blade with mortise and tenon, glue and natural fiber rope.
Living in Hawai'i and Papua New Guinea mythical dragon like images abound. A fun mix of the two cultures I love!

ITEM D & E: Robusta Paddles. (Hawaiian Design)
54" in length. Functional
Matching set. Made of 50+ year old Robusta taken from an old saw mill on the Big Island of Hawai'i. The white strips are poplar. These paddles are functional...built to last. Marine epoxy adhesive used in the lamination with 5 coats of spar varnish. A modern look to a very old Hawaiian paddle design.
